Contemporary Leadership Challenge

When investigating the problem of contemporary leadership challenge, it is very important to note that leadership as the contemporary phenomenon is a popular object among scientists and scholars. However, the problems with effective leadership exist in the society; and are particularly evident in the defining and evaluating characteristic features of the leader. In the time of economic development, scientific advancement and improvement of technical equipment, contemporary leaders have to change accordingly. The characteristic features of the contemporary leadership in K-12 education should develop following these innovations.

For instance, examining modern educational area and its participants Robert K. Greenleaf founded and explained the notion of servant leadership. He described all his thoughts regarding the notion and presented research results of the phenomenon in his book The Servant as Leader. According to his point of view, a person with characteristics of a servant leader exists in every society. However, this fact does not always have positive outcomes. According to educational institutions, a pupil with such characteristic features can negatively influence the process of studying. That is why a leader at school must have only merits; otherwise he is a negative factor in the process of education.

It is important to describe a portrait of a school leader in K-12 education. The positive characteristic features include being well-bred, careful, aspiring to study, polite, friendly, and sociable pupil, who gets only excellent marks goes in for sports, has no bad habits, does everything on time and takes active part in school life. Servant leadership possesses the special purpose of leadership at school. It is the role and the potential of a leader in the future life. The leading pupil possesses positive or negative characteristics and has earned image at school. Usually, the pupil takes active part in school life and has influence on his classmates. Pupils usually create a leadership image by themselves. Moreover, they may be either good or bad pupil at school. It depends on classmates interests and their points of view towards leading characteristic features.

When explaining the concept of servant leadership at school, it is necessary to analyze the source of this notion. The Bible is the initial source that introduced the concept. The first example of the servant leader is Jesus, who comes to serve but not to be served. It means that a leader, who acts according to general norms of behavior and discards his own desires for the same of other, may be a connecting and supportive link between a teacher and the pupils. If the leader has a bad influence, he might destroy the process of education.

In order to become a servant leader, every person has to pass all stages of leadership development from the very beginning as a servant to become a real leader. However, trying to achieve the last stage of this hierarchy, the individual may become a leader, a person who usually serves and is served. In some instances, there are many servant leaders at one school and even in one class. It leads to struggles among these leaders, and as the result the atmosphere is not friendly and tense in the form. All these facts have negative influence on the process of studying.

However, in spite of the negative effects of the leadership competition, servant leadership has an effective role in K-12 learning system. It means that the connective factor for all participants in education, such as students, teachers, parents, institution governments and others is the leadership and teamwork. So, all members of this collaboration system depend on and influence each other. Moreover, there is a connecting link, which helps to manipulate, direct, improve some way weak points of education; this link is the leader. Collaborative school leaders design instructional environment that encourage effective instruction and accountability for student outcomes, efficient use of school resources, and professional growth of faculty. While investigating such a type of the leader, Rubin gives a definition of a collaborative leader as a responsible person for the process of education concerning the achievement of the common goal and success in this area. This type of the leader always knows what to do and what instructions to follow in order to achieve a successful result. By making appropriate decisions, he or she directs the process of education by acting in a way as teachers need.

It is necessary to admit that the collaborative leader is usually reserved to for resolving contemporary issues, and working together with leaders in student body is an appropriate way of directing the process of education. Teachers can reserve to communicate with student leaders while trying to manage the crowd of people and make them do obligatory actions. Understanding the leaders psychology, his way of behavior and his degree of influence on the group are the helpful tools for the teachers. Only after connecting with the group of students, a teacher can influence them. In addition, in order not to spend his energy on every person in the group, the teacher distributes required roles between leaders of the group or focuses only on one student leader. Planning the work and distributing actions in appropriate ways is a contribution for the teacher in solving different problems in the process of education and achieving the successful goals for the short period of time.

In conclusion it is important to admit that contemporary leadership plays one of the main roles in the process of education. The teacher determines the leader of the group, investigates his characteristic features, analyzes his strong and weak points and ways of his behavior, and directs his actions for managing the whole group in the appropriate way. This convenient and trustworthy method of education planning helps the teacher to economize the time and successfully achieve goals while spending less resources and energy. In order to investigate characteristic features of all students of the group, the teacher to examine manner of behavior and habits of the leader. So, by orienting to the leader among students, the teacher improves his work and makes it easier and more successful.
